What is Body Negativity or Body Dissatisfaction?
Body dissatisfaction refers to the persistent negative thoughts and emotions an individual experiences about their physical appearance. Although it is primarily an internal cognitive and emotional process, external factors such as societal pressure to conform to certain appearance standards can exacerbate it. Body dissatisfaction can lead to unhealthy weight-management behaviors, such as disordered eating, which can increase the risk of developing an eating disorder.
Having a negative body image can lead to the development of mental health conditions such as depression. It may also result in pursuing unnecessary surgeries, unsafe weight loss habits, or inappropriate use of hormones to build muscles. According to NEDA, there is a strong association between eating disorders and negative body image. This may also lead to the development of BDD, where a person sees a part or all of their body in a negative way. They may opt for cosmetic surgery to "correct" what they perceive as a flaw, such as nose size, even when it appears normal to everyone else.
Body image is a major concern for young people in Australia and is ranked among the top three. Body dissatisfaction and overvaluing one's appearance in defining their own self-worth are risk factors that can make some individuals more susceptible to developing an eating disorder than others. People who are unhappy with their bodies may become fixated on trying to alter their body shape, which can lead to unhealthy practices such as restrictive diets, excessive exercise, or taking supplements. However, these practices often fail to produce the desired results and can create a vicious cycle of negative emotions such as disappointment, shame, guilt, and ultimately increase the risk of developing an eating disorder.
